THE INSIDE PASSAGE

For people who live in the communities along the Alaskan panhandle, the Inside Passage is a transportation corridor, a lifeline to the outside world. For cruise passengers, the 1,000 mile waterway is a constant adventure. Protected by offshore islands and tempered by Kuroshio (the Japanese Current), this vast jumble of deep channels, secluded bays and thickly forested islands is as beautiful today as it was when Captain George Vancouver discovered it two hundred years ago.

DID YOU KNOW...?

Small icebergs are called "growlers"
Skagway is the only Southeast Alaska town built on level ground
Juneau has a glacier within its city limits
Bald eagles aren't bald - they have a cap of white feathers
There are more pilots' licenses in Alaska than in any other state
The Inside Passage is known as Alaska's Marine Highway

OVERNIGHT AND TODAY

After our departure from Vancouver yesterday, Star Sapphire sailed through the Strait of Georgia towards Discovery Passage, passing Seymour Narrows during the night. We then cruised Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage. This morning at approximately 8.00am we'll pass Pine Island. At this time, Star Sapphire will set a course towards the Laredo and Principe Channels on our way to Triple Island Pilot Station, where we expect to arrive at  approximately 7.45pm. Our Canadian pilots will disembark and the Southeastern Alaska pilots will embark at the same time. We will then sail towards Juneau via the Dixon Entrance, Chatham Strait and Stephens Passage.

Please click here to see an overall map of the area between Vancouver and Prince Rupert, BC (near where Triple Island Pilot Station is.). (Prince Rupert is indicated by an "A" on the map.)

Please see the individual maps below for a closeup view of the Inside Passage.
