Cold Play - Reviews
5 stars Another great yarn from Winona Kent., 22 Sept. 2015 By Edward Cowling This review is from: Cold Play (Paperback) Another great yarn from Winona Kent. This time we're on a cruise ship in Alaska. Good story that will keep you reading to the last page. 5 stars Mystery and suspense on board a cruise to Alaska! 31 Aug. 2015 By Brian Richmond Format:Kindle Edition This was the second book by Winona Kent I chose to read and just after I had been lucky enough to take the very same cruise up the coast of Alaska in the MS Noordam! I was so amazed by the story and how well it had been written, especially by the accurate description of the cruise itself! I loved the mixture of characters, especially the hero of the story Jason Davey and the plot which held my attention from beginning to end. Well done Winona and I am looking forward to reading The Cilla Rose Affair; I am sure I will be gripped by that story as much as I have by the previous two! I hope you will be writing many more in the years to come! I am now an avid fan! |

Right
from the opening chapter I was drawn into the
story and couldn't put it down! It is set on a cruise ship that has
only a few more trips to make before she is retired. Jason, the
narrator, is a musician working on board. Jason is an avid user of
Twitter and as the story unfolds we begin to realise that he is being
'e' stalked. Things begin to hot up when Jason discovers that the
stalker has joined the cruise. They hot up even more when Jason is
attacked and his cabin is set alight. Winona keeps us on the edge of
our seats right to the very end. Twists and turns throughout. Fabulous.
This is the first book that I have read by Winona Kent and I can't wait
to read another.A. Wilson

Really
enjoyed this. I tend to like
thrillers where you learn a lot about something you knew nothing about
before, and I never thought there was that much interesting about the
cruise ship business. Cold Play works very well on that level, plus the
dialogue is fun, including the stuff that happens in Twitter
conversations - first time I have seen that in a novel.

I
received this book from the
author with a request for review.
I liked this book from the very start. The setting is marvelous and unusual: a vintage cruiser ship currently doing 7-day Alaskan cruises. Jason, an entertainer on the cruise ship, is the story's narrator. He has a great voice with a gentle sense of humor that shows in his observations of his life, fellow crew members and the passengers, and frequently about himself. This is not a thrill-a-second story. Rather, it slowly unfolds and reveals more layers of intrigue. However, it never felt slow to me. Jason is a good story teller and pretty much the book could have been about nothing more than life on a cruise ship and it would've been interesting. Pointless, but interesting. Fortunately for us readers, however, there's more to this story than life on a cruise ship. The pace continues to pick up as events twist and turn to the final revelations in the end. Nothing horribly surprising - unexpected, but not surprising - but well told and compelling enough to keep me turning pages until I was finally done. I'd actually look forward to another book featuring this character, but this one doesn't really hint at a sequel or leave much mystery for another. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it's a good value for the price. |

When
Winona Kent
visted my website, Cruise Bruise, and asked me if she could send me a
copy of her new book, Cold Play, I was reluctant. I'm on record as not
being a fan of novels, especially romance novels. As soon as I opened the cover of Cold Play, I began to stall between words. It seemed odd, the writing seemed off with incomplete sentences and phrases. Kent was deliberately stalling the reading and comprehension process, making me stop to think, to hover on the words. I didn't like it at all and I was only on page two of the book. I wanted to put the book down, refuse to read any more. After all, it's no secret that I don't like fiction; I'm highly critical of love stories and novels that have no real life value. Yet here I am on page two, my mind stopping and starting like a car being clutched for the first time by a teenage driver, trying to figure out, what in the hell this author is doing. As I get to the bottom of page two, the last paragraph, everything changes. Kent has my attention, my full attention. I have work to do, real work on the computers in front of me. Yet, I know, I won't be able to put this book down until I've read the last page. Kent starts the story off quickly with drama and action. It's the middle of the night, wee hours of the morning, nearly all the passengers are asleep in their cabins, when a musician aboard, Jason Davey, happens upon the smell of something burning. While he wants to run, to save himself, he feels compelled as a result of his training to aid and assist with the reporting and containment of the fire, then to assist passengers, who are bewildered, squinting from the sudden exposure to light, wearing their pajamas which are still warm from being snuggled beneath the blankets on their cabin beds. While the novel is fiction, the event is very real, as terrifying as it gets on a real cruise ship in the real world |

Anyone who has ever
gone on a cruise
and wondered, "What are the staff really like, and what happens behind
the scenes?" will enjoy this book - but let's hope it's not YOUR next
cruise it's based on! Life onboard an Alaska-bound boat is
well-described with details experienced cruisers will recognize. The
descriptions of passengers and crew are touched with humor, and
multiple mysterious story lines keep a reader's attention. What sets
this book apart from other fast-paced reads is the quality of the
language - the author's MFA is evident - but it's never stuffy, just
fun. This would be a perfect beach book - or one to take on a cruise!

I
have never been
on a cruise, and this book is as if I was a passenger. Winona's writing
is very descriptive. I also love crime stories. I think it is a great
book and informative as well. Winona happens to be a Twitter friend,
but I am writing this review because I enjoyed it. I was not
compensated to write this review. I recommend Cold Play to all of you.
It's a good read. I can hardly wait for her next book as soon as its
available. |

I bought this book
because Winona
Kent, a virtual friend, wrote it. It was originally available only on
Kindle. I saved it for my beach vacation, so I'd have something
interesting and short, at least I hoped interesting. I was more than
rewarded for more patience. I was originally a bit put off by the
start--the language of incomplete sentences, for example-- but also
realized that this was the perfect way to present someone confronted by
an emergency. After all, who thinks in complete sentences when faced
with such an emergency? The story, the characters, the language
entirely captured my attention and interest by the time the fire had
been put out. I'm not a twitter follower, but Kent draws the
twitterverse into the story seamlessly, turning it from a gimmick into
an essential part of the plot. I've been on the Alaska passage cruise,
traveling even on a ship facing its retirement, like this one. The
author's attention to the details of Alaska cruising, the food, the
temperature changes, the persistent rain in Juneau and Sitka, the
landscape (especially the glaciers), were well done, not overly done,
with just enough description to create a mental image and not so much
as to over power the imagination. Well done, fun read, and HIGHLY
recommended. Not 5 stars, but she's not Dorothy Sayers or Georgette
Heyer (yet).

Cold Play is a
fast-paced novel with
great dialogue, characters and plot twists, tweets and turns. I've been
on several cruises but not one to Alaska. The author's attention to
detail is remarkable. The ship's layout, the crew, what goes on "below
decks" and the "atmosphere" of being on a cruise were captured without
the novel falling into the trap of being so detailed to make it a
tedious read. It's not often that I read a book and end a chapter eager
to read what happens next, but Cold Play was that type of novel. I'm
not a "tweeter", but quickly picked up the Twitter jargon which added
another interesting layer to the novel. For me, the most satisfying
moment came early in the book when the narrator Jason Davey puts to
rest the "Love Boat" connection and that silly theme song from the Love
Boat TV series. You can ask Jason to sing it when you're in the TopDeck
Lounge; hopefully he'll decline. As a previous reviewer said and I
agree, Cold Play is a perfect beach book or heavens forbid, a book to
take on your next cruise.

I read this book on
Sunday night and
Monday afternoon and I absolutely loved it.I thought it is very well
done and I could very well imagine the story in my mind. Actually I
ended up dreaming about what I had read on Sunday night and I have to
say that barely ever happens after I read a book. Anyways I highly
recommend this .

out of 5 stars A book that
manages to be both dramatic and funny
Format:
Paperback
Loved this book. At
times it had me
laughing out loud with Kent's sharp observations on the behind the
scenes cruise world. But it was also touching and emotional, showing
the softer side of the main character, and the ending was one of the
best written dramatic scenes I've encountered outside of a thriller.
Highly recommend this book.
